Greater Manchester is currently compliant with the legal limit for particulate matter PM10 and the target value for PM2.5, but not for NO2.
Government has instructed more than 60 local authorities and city-regions, including Greater Manchester, to develop plans to bring levels of nitrogen dioxide air pollution at the roadside within legal limits “in the shortest possible time”.
The published plans are designed to tackle this issue but would also reduce other air pollutants emitted by road transport, including particulates and carbon dioxide.
Although there is no legal limit for PM2.5, Greater Manchester has made a commitment to meet the World Health Organisation’s (2006) guideline for PM2.5 pollution levels of 10ug/m3 by 2030. The results from 2020 saw compliance with the WHO guideline value at all 6 monitoring stations across GM.
